Late last week I, along with two partners – the Business Council of NYS and Unshackle Upstate, sent a letter urging Comptroller DiNapoli to stand down on his persistent opposition to enacting significant pension reform in New York.
Without enacting Governor Cuomo’s Tier VI as proposed, we estimate that taxpayers will be exposed to $123 billion in more taxes and businesses would face a more than $17 billion increase in property taxes. Clearly this is unsustainable.
But as budget negotiations begin to ramp up and the Governor sending mixed signals, it is vitally important that the business community remains steadfast in pushing for Tier VI with the defined contribution piece intact, and not a watered down version.
Noteworthy on the national front, today NFIB continues to fight back against costly and onerous mandates, with the Environmental Protection Agency in our sights. Politicians and bureaucrats from Albany to Washington DC and beyond need to be constantly reminded that government does not create jobs, but their actions sure can stifle them.
